Develop communications technology skills. Be computer-literate and develop touch-typing skills. Learn the most commonly used software package for the medical field, as well as learning fundamental bookkeeping. Learn the language of the medical profession: anatomy and physiology, along with medical procedures. And become skilled in insurance billing and coding. But you'll also learn the clinical side. Perform injections, learn phlebotomy techniques and 12-lead EKG procedures. Learn how to take vital signs, specimen collection, infection control and safety measures, and even assist in physical exams and learn minor office surgical procedures. Having completed your course of studies and externship successfully, you will be eligible to test for certification through the National Healthcareer Association's examinations to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant; a Certified Phlebotomist; a Certified EKG Technician; and a Certified Billing & Coding Specialist.
